Cat-5 Soldering

Here is a picture of Doug soldering connectors onto the ends of the Cat-5 cable I ran between the living room and my bedroom. I was using S-Video baluns to send my living room Tivo signal into my bedroom, but the balun filtered out all of the bass! So since I was using a distribution amp anyway, I decided to just go balun-less to my bedroom. And you know what? It works! I wouldn't call it perfect -- but there is only a very slight interference on the S-Video signal -- and a very slight noise on the audio signal. The balun actually had these faint vertical bands in the picture (which aren't there now) and the before mentioned audio filtering effect. From a few feet away, you cannot see the slight interference on my new setup and you only her the audio if you turn the volume up super loud. (Which I never do in my bedroom.) So problem solved -- and at minimal cost! The baluns are expensive and I will be returning them to my friend who gave them to me. (For him to sell on ebay.)

Last Summer

Cinema Nolita strikes again at Kim's Video with another fine hand drawn poster for a screening of the underrated and (almost) forgotten 1969 film directed by Frank Perry, adapted from the novel by Evan Hunter (aka Ed McBain). Took a film class long time ago where Hunter showed up to discuss The Birds, unfortunately I didn't go up at the end and ask him about his thoughts on the adaptation.
Would you like to play a game??

OK, Flickr Friends -- here's a movie trivia game for you. This is a sign that I drive by nearly every day. It is attached to Lee's Video Library in Anderson, Indiana. Lee's recently closed their doors and the building is for sale. I got worried that some other business would buy the property and tear down this hand-painted sign that has been there for as long as I can remember. By my count, there are twenty-one characters featured on the sign which I have numbered using notes (hover your pointer over the photo to reveal them). In your comment, identify, by number, the character or characters you are attempting to identify. Here's what I'm looking for: a.) The name of the actor/actress (1 pt.) b.) The name of the character portrayed (1 pt.) c.) The name of film from which each still was taken. (1 pt.) d.) Bonus points if you can link to either the screen capture or production still that was likely used as the model for each painting. (3 pts.) Winner will receive ten (10) constructive comments on their photostream from me and at least 2 'faves.' What? Were you expecting cash?? I have no idea how quickly this will go, but I'll leave it up for a week and allow more time if it seems necessary. I'll update the notes on each character when correct answers are given. Correct answers will be judged my me. Whiners will be awarded no points, and may God have mercy on their souls. :-) Correct Answers: 1. Sylvester Stallone; John J. Rambo; Rambo: First Blood Part II 2. Bela Lugosi; Count Dracula; Dracula 3. Clint Eastwood; The Man With No Name/"Joe"/"Blondie"; A Fistful of Dollars 4. Charles Bronson; Paul Kersey; Death Wish? 5. Clark Gable; Rhett Butler; Gone With The Wind 6. Charles Fleischer (voice); Roger Rabbit; Who Framed Roger Rabbit 7. Ray Bolger?; The Scarecrow?; The Wizard of Oz (1939)? 8. Elizabeth Taylor; Cleopatra; Cleopatra 9. Leonard Nimoy; Mr. Spock; Star Trek (various) 10. Humphrey Bogart; Charlie Allnut; The African Queen 11. Katharine Hepburn, Rose Sayer, The African Queen? 12. William Shatner, Admiral James T. Kirk, Star Trek: The Motion Picture 13. Marilyn Monroe; The Girl; The Seven Year Itch? 14. Christopher Reeve; Superman; Superman (1978) 15. Charlie Chaplin; The Little Tramp; difficult to identify a specific film here -- there were so many with this exact character 16. John Wayne; very difficult to identify a specific character or film on this one. 17. Ginger Rogers; Dale Tremont; Top Hat 18. Fred Astaire, Jerry Travers, Top Hat 19. ummm, yeah, there are some notes on the pic... might have to open in another window for a bigger size to see it all. not shown: one of the pcs that all of this crap is/was connected to (main pc) 19" crt (at the time, lcd was still prohibitive for me) also a neat trick. use a shelf or other platform to hold the scanner, printer and the monitor, behind the table, and then you have the entire table are for the feet and chocolates and other crap. (not forgetting the keyboard, it's in the lap across the legs when ur feet are up) (not forgetting the mouse, since real computer users don't need to use such crude and slow input device)
s-video cable connector - _MG_8908.embed

i'm migrating my video tape recordings from high school through college to digital. i wanted a longer s-video cable to go between the video deck and the video converter this cable format is so archaic that even the top-of-the-line "monster" style cables (in this case branded Acoustic Research) are selling for less than the cost of shipping them. you could probably belay a rock climber using a longer version of this heavy duty cable. too bad it can't improve the signal passing through it! c/o wikipedia: Separate Video[1], more commonly known as S-Video, also called Y/C, and sometimes incorrectly [2] referred to as Super Video[3], is an analog video signal that carries video data as two separate signals: luma (luminance) and chroma (color). This differs from composite video, which carries picture information as a single lower-quality signal, and component video, which carries picture information as three separate higher-quality signals. S-Video carries standard definition video (typically at 480i or 576i resolution), but does not carry audio on the same cable. copyright © 2010 sean dreilinger view s-video cable connector - _MG_8908 embed on a black background.
